Oral Marking Scheme

Part A

  1. Each candidate will be awarded two separate scores by each examiner.
  2. There are two boxes named A1 and A2.
  3. A1 is based on the appropriateness of the candidates' response to a question. There are a total of seven marks in A1:

    Mark 1: successfully convey the message in question 6
    Mark 2-7: correctly respond to question 1-6
    * Markers will not award any marks to candidate if the answer is incomplete.
    Correct answer: John went to Stanley for Shopping.
    Incorrect answer: John went to Stanley.
    Please note that "Shopping" is missing in the answer.
  4. A2 is an overall impression mark from 0-7 based on the candidate's general performance in Task 1 and Task 2.

    Task 1 refers to questioning process and Task 2 refers to answering questions from oral examiners.
  5. General performance in A2 refers to candidates' intelligibility - the coherence of his conversation, the fluency of his questions and answers and his ability in handling pronunciation, grammar, stress and intonation. Conversational strategies such as greeting and taking leaves, introducing himself and explaining his purpose, questioning techniques and asking for clarification are also considered.

Part B - group interaction

Each candidate will be awarded an overall impression mark from 0-7.

Markers will focus the marking on:

  1. coherence of the ideas
  2. fluency
  3. grammar and pronunciation
  4. turn-taking
  5. responding coherently
  6. asking for and giving clarification
  7. facilitating the discourse by encouraging and helping the other candidates.
  8. quantity of discussion - students giving too little or too much contribution may receive a lower grade.
  9. quality and relevance of the discussion.

The approximate percentages of candidates receiving each grade are as follows:
